G8, lettera a Obama su B. “Not in my name”

Gentile presidente Obama,
Se vent’anni fa mi avessero detto che un giorno avrei scritto al presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America, non lo avrei ritenuto possibile. Adesso le circostanze me lo impongono, nell’interesse del mio Paese, che mi onoro di rappresentare al Parlamento europeo.

Tutta l’Italia ha visto l’imbarazzante video del G8 di Deauville durante il quale il nostro anziano presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri l’ha avvicinata per metterla al corrente della “deriva” che riguarderebbe la nostra “magistratura politicizzata”, del fatto che tutti i giudici “di sinistra” vogliono rovinarlo. Sono certa che non le ha raccontato di essere indagato a Firenze come mandante occulto delle stragi del 1993 in Italia, ma ritengo che la stampa estera abbia dato ampio spazio agli scandali di Silvio Berlusconi, per cui probabilmente i cittadini statunitensi, più di quelli italiani, conoscono la pochezza politica di quest’uomo.

Mi rendo conto del ruolo difficile del presidente degli Usa, e comprendo che per protocollo deve intrattenere rapporti con i primi ministri dei più importanti Paesi. Non mi permetterei di chiederle cosa abbia risposto al premier Berlusconi, posso solo immaginare l’imbarazzo, forse pari a quello provato quando nel 2009, a Buckingham Palace, il nostro presidente del Consiglio, di recente rinviato a giudizio per prostituzione minorile e concussione, cominciò a urlare “Mister Obama”, riuscendo a farsi rimproverare anche dall’impassibile regina d’Inghilterra che, guardandolo con austerità, lo ammonì: “Ma perché deve urlare?”.

Quello che mi preme far presente è che, qualora lei dovesse avere anche un solo flebile dubbio su quei magistrati cui faceva riferimento il presidente del Consiglio italiano, io sono disposta, in qualità di cittadina italiana, di presidente dell’Associazione Nazionale Familiari Vittime di Mafia e di parlamentare europeo membro della Commissione Libe, a raccontarle la vera storia della magistratura italiana e il lavoro dei giudici antimafia che mi onoro di conoscere uno per uno e sulla cui onestà e rettitudine sono pronta a giurare. Ogni giorno essi combattono su due fronti: la mafia, che li vuole morti, e il Governo italiano, che cerca dal 1994 in ogni modo di ostacolarne il lavoro.

Mi conceda la possibilità di raccontarle la verità. Non vorrei che la sua idea della magistratura italiana possa essere deviata da un uomo, Silvio Berlusconi, che insulta i giudici dicendo che sono “antropologicamente diversi”, “mentalmente deviati” e “un cancro”, e che offende il loro lavoro affermando che cercare la verità sulle stragi di mafia è uno “spreco di danaro pubblico”. Berlusconi è un uomo che rimane in politica per salvarsi dai suoi guai giudiziari e che non rappresenta più nessuno.

La storia della magistratura italiana è una storia ricca di orgoglio, fatta di uomini e donne integerrime che hanno pagato il prezzo più alto per le loro battaglie, contro il terrorismo prima e contro la criminalità organizzata poi.

Proprio pochi giorni fa si è saputo di un progetto omicida ai danni di un magistrato italiano, Antonino Di Matteo, che sta seguendo i processi più complessi, occupandosi delle collusioni tra mafia e istituzioni deviate. Un magistrato serio e competente tra i più esposti e aggrediti da chi dovrebbe proteggere i servitori dello Stato come lui. I magistrati italiani non meritano di essere ridicolizzati di fronte al mondo e di fronte al presidente degli Stati Uniti.

Open letter to Barack Obama: “Silvio does not speak in my name”

Dear Mr. President Obama,
If twenty years ago someone had told me that one day I would be writing to the President of the United States of America, I would have reflected on it as impossible. However, the present circumstances require me to do so in the interests of my country which I am honoured to represent in the European Parliament.

Everybody in Italy has seen an embarrassing video of the G8 in Deauville during which our President of the Council of Ministers has approached you to let you know of the “drift” of our “politicized judiciary,” that all the judges of the “left party” want to damage it. I am sure that our Prime Minister forgot to mention that he was under enquiry in Florence as a principal of the massacres of 1993 in Italy, but I think the foreign press has given a big voice to the scandals related to Silvio Berlusconi. I would imagine that U.S. citizens, have a greater knowledge than the Italians of the political insignificance of this man.

I am aware of the difficult role of the President of the United States, and I understand that for protocol reasons, you must maintain relations with the Prime Ministers of major countries. I am not asking you how you responded to Prime Minister Berlusconi. I can only imagine the shame, perhaps the same that was felt in 2009, in Buckingham Palace, when our Prime Minister was linked to child prostitution and extortion andhe screamed “Mr. Obama!”. This provoked a reaction from the gentle Queen of England and Mr. Berlusconi was asked “Why should you scream?”.

What I want to point out is that if you have only a faint doubt on those judges referred by the Italian Prime Minister, I am prepared, as an Italian citizen, president of the National Association of Victims of the Mafia Family, MEP and member of the LIBE Committee, to explain the true story of the Italian magistrate and the work of Italian anti-mafia judges that I am honoured to know personally and whose honesty and uprightness are ready to swear. Everyday they fight on two fronts: the mafia, which wants them dead, and the Italian government, which has tried since 1994 in every way to hinder the work.

Please give me the chance to tell the truth. I would not like his idea of the Italian magistrate to be sidetracked by a man, Silvio Berlusconi, who insults the judges saying they are “anthropologically different”, “mentally deviant” and a “cancer” and that offends their work stating that an attempt to establish the truth about the massacres of the Mafia is a “waste of public money.” Berlusconi is a man who participates in politics to save himself from his legal problems and he does not represent anyone now.

The history of the Italian magistrates is a rich history of pride, made up of men and women of integrity who have paid the ultimate price for their battles against terrorism and organized crime.
Just a few days ago, we learned that a project for killing an Italian judge, Antonio Di Matteo, who is following the most complex processes, especially on collusion between mafia and diverted institutions. A serious and proficient magistrate, one of the most exposed and attacked by those who should protect the servants of the State like him. The Italian judges must not be ridiculed in front of the world and in front of the President of the United States.
